AKRON ZOO HISTORY
In 1900, George and Ann Perkins, heirs of the city’s founder, Simon Perkins, donated what is now Perkins Woods Park to the City of Akron. They stipulated that the 79 acres be used for “...the sole purpose of devoting the same to the uses of a public park, especially as a place for recreation for children.”

With this goal in mind, the Akron Museum of Natural History was incorporated in 1950, by Charles E. Slusser, Richard S. Barnhardt, Daniel E. Falkner, Myrtle Pfueger, and Fred O. Smoyer. The Museum operated as a non-profit organization and helped to stimulate interest in the conservation of natural resources and provided entertainment for the public in the Summit County area.

The Akron Children’s Zoo was started in 1953 in association with the Museum. The zoo’s theme was Mother Goose Rhymes illustrated with live animal exhibits. Public support helped the zoo open ten exhibits in 1954, and an additional exhibit, the Merry Miller, in 1955. Sponsored by the Yusef-Khan Grotto, all mentally retarded, handicapped, and underprivileged children were admitted free
Conservation
Conservation is a popular word at the zoo. It is part of the zoo’s mission and goals to focus on conservation and involvement at all levels in restoration, preservation and reintroduction programs.

Your Akron Zoo plays an active role in several conservation projects by committing funds, staff time and exhibit space in support of these programs. The zoo designates 1 percent of all gate receipts and donations from the wishing well to the Akron Zoo’s Conservation Fund. The monies from this fund are used to support field research, preserve habitat and develop education programs.
ZOO CAMP
ZooCamp is a great way for children to learn about zoo animals, animal behaviors and wildlife in general.

Each one-day program includes a tour of the zoo with a ZooCamp coordinator, close encounters with our animal ambassadors, a t-shirt, a keep-sake photo, a zoo souvenir and a take-home craft.

Educational Programs
The Akron Zoo offers many educational programs for children and adults alike. All our educational programs are organized by age group so you and your group can learn the most from our programs.
